Walking into a hot yoga studio for the first time can feel intimidating. The heat, the unfamiliar postures, the room full of experienced practitioners—it's a lot to take in. But here at Sumit's Hot Yoga KC in Olathe, KS, we want you to know: everyone starts somewhere, and our community is here to support you from day one.
Before You Arrive: Preparation
Hydration is the single most important thing you can do before your first class. Start drinking water throughout the day—not just right before you walk in. Aim for at least 64 ounces in the hours leading up to class. Eat a light meal or snack about two hours beforehand; you don't want a full stomach in a heated room, but you do need fuel.
What to Wear
Less is more when it comes to hot yoga attire. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that move with you. Women typically wear fitted leggings or shorts and a sports bra or tank top. Men often wear athletic shorts and a fitted shirt, though many prefer to go shirtless. Avoid loose, baggy clothing—it traps heat and can get in the way during postures.
The Heat: What It Actually Feels Like
Our studio is heated to approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with controlled humidity. When you first walk in, the warmth will be noticeable but not overwhelming. Within the first few minutes of class, your body begins to acclimate. You will sweat—a lot. This is completely normal and actually the point. The heat warms your muscles deeply, allowing for safer, deeper stretching. If at any point you feel lightheaded, simply take a knee or rest in Child's Pose. There's no judgment here at Sumit's Hot Yoga KC.
A Typical Class Flow
Most of our classes at the Olathe studio follow a structured sequence. You'll begin with centering breathwork to connect your mind and body. From there, the instructor guides you through a series of standing postures that build heat and challenge your balance. The class then transitions to floor postures that focus on deep stretching, core work, and hip openers. Every class ends with savasana—a few minutes of complete stillness and rest that allows your body to absorb the benefits of the practice. The entire experience typically lasts 60 to 75 minutes.
After Class
Rehydrate immediately. Water with electrolytes is ideal. You'll likely feel a combination of energized and deeply relaxed—a feeling our students affectionately call the "hot yoga high." Your muscles may be slightly sore the next day, similar to what you'd feel after a good workout. This is normal and diminishes as your body adapts to regular practice.
Tips for Beginners
Arrive 15 minutes early so our front desk team can show you around and answer any questions. Set up your mat near the back of the room if you'd like to follow along with experienced students. Don't compare yourself to anyone else in the room—focus on your own breath and your own body. And most importantly, come back. The second class is almost always easier than the first, and by your third or fourth session, the heat begins to feel like a welcome friend.
At Sumit's Hot Yoga KC, we proudly serve the Olathe and Kansas City communities with classes designed for every level. Our new student special makes it easy and affordable to start your journey. We can't wait to welcome you to the mat.
