Getting ready for your first hot yoga class doesn't require a huge investment, but having the right gear makes a significant difference in your comfort and experience. Whether you're joining us at Sumit's Hot Yoga KC in Olathe or exploring hot yoga elsewhere in the Kansas City area, this guide will help you show up prepared and confident.
Choosing the Right Mat
Not all yoga mats are created equal, and this is especially true for hot yoga. Standard mats can become dangerously slippery once you start sweating. Look for a mat with a non-slip, textured surface—materials like natural rubber or polyurethane top layers grip better when wet. Popular options for hot yoga include the Liforme, Manduka PRO, and Jade Harmony. A thickness of 4 to 5 millimeters provides good cushioning without sacrificing stability.
Towels Are Essential
You'll need at least two towels for a hot yoga class. A full-length mat towel goes on top of your yoga mat to absorb sweat and prevent slipping—think of it as a second layer of grip. Microfiber mat towels from brands like Yogitoes or Shandali are designed specifically for this purpose. Your second towel is a standard hand towel for wiping your face and hands during class. Trust us: you'll use it.
What to Wear
The golden rule for hot yoga clothing is: fitted, lightweight, and moisture-wicking. Cotton absorbs sweat and becomes heavy, so synthetic fabrics or blended materials are your best bet. Women typically find that high-waisted leggings (capri or full-length) paired with a sports bra or fitted tank work best. Men usually prefer fitted shorts above the knee and an optional athletic shirt. Avoid anything loose or baggy—it will cling uncomfortably and restrict your movement when wet.
Hydration Gear
Bring a large, insulated water bottle—at least 24 ounces. An insulated bottle keeps your water cold throughout the entire class, which feels incredible during the more challenging sequences. Many students add electrolyte tablets or powder to their water to replace the minerals lost through heavy sweating. Brands like Nuun and LMNT are popular choices among our Sumit's Hot Yoga KC community.
Helpful Accessories
A few optional items can enhance your experience. A yoga strap helps you ease into stretches if your flexibility is still developing. Yoga blocks provide support and stability in certain postures. A small spray bottle with water can be refreshing during class. And a dedicated yoga bag keeps all your gear organized and your car seats dry after class.
